This entry is part 11 of 20 in the series PMP Exam Tips

You must use your time very effectively for the PMP exam. There are two aspects in time management for the PMP exam: time management while preparing for the exam and while taking the exam at test centers. Many articles were written about the second aspect, so in this article I will address some tips regarding preparation for the PMP exam.

Preparing and taking the PMP exam is a project itself. That is why you should plan for it very carefully and you should have strong commitment to achieve your goal: become PMP certified. There are 3 things you should follow in planning your preparation for the PMP exam.

1. Set a concrete time to take the exam

Every project has a begin date and an end date. Knowing the end date is essential. The worst way to prepare for the PMP exam is starting out without planning when you will take the exam. With the goal set, your commitment toward the exam will be much stronger.

In order to define when you will take the exam, you must know

  • How much time per week you can dedicate for preparation.
  • Your personal experience in project management.

These are two key factors to define when you will be ready for the exam. I would be glad to consult personally with you, just email me at nguyen.longson@gmail.com

2. Apply for the exam right after your planning

I have seen many people who defer their application very closed to the planned exam date. This does not work well for your preparation, for some reasons

  • Firstly, application for the exam include many steps, and it is not always quick. In the worst case, you can get an audit requirements from PMI for your application, and it takes you from 2-3 weeks to collect all information required by PMI.
  • After your application is approved by PMI and your registration at the test center is confirmed, it will help you concentrate on your preparation. Because if you do not take the exam on that date, you will lost your money.

For these reasons, I recommend you to apply for the exam right after planning your exam date. Follow these steps

  • Apply for a membership at PMI. After getting your membership approved, you can download PMI Global Standards and many useful publications.
  • Apply for the exam, filling application form.
  • If PMI requires you to go through an audit process, follow their required steps, collecting information on your education, project management experience etc.
  • After getting your application approved, register for a place in the nearest test exam.

3. Create a study schedule and strictly follow your schedule

Every project has to have a schedule. Your project to take the PMP exam is the same. Creating a study schedule is essential. However, you can find it difficult, because prior to learning you do not have enough information about what you will face with during studying and preparation.
